The Maritime University in Gdynia is the largest state school of higher education in Poland and one of the largest in Europe. Since 1920 the University has been preparing graduates for officer positions on board merchant marine vessels and for managerial positions at the land-based institutions and companies representing the maritime industry and seaside regions. The University's four Faculties offer degree in Navigation, Marine Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Business Administration.
At present the Gdynia Maritime University provides studies for 8 000 students in the following specializations: sea transport, fleet and port operations, marine power plant operation, repairing technology of ship and harbour facilities, industrial plant operation, repair management engineering, ship electro-automation, computer control system, marine electronic engineering, digital radio communication, management of commercial projects, management of the hotel and tourism and services, commodity sciences and quality management, organisation of the seaborn trade, business management, e-business, technology of foot and nutrition. Specialization in operational engineering of industrial installations has been offered as a joint project performed by the University and the Hochschule Bremerhaven in Germany for ten years now.
The programs of studies satisfy both Polish educational standards provided by the Ministry of Education and also the requirements of the International Maritime Organisation - IMO. The academic staff - representing doctor of science degree, habilitated doctor of science degree and scientific titles of a professor accompanied, in many cases, by the highest marine diplomas of a Master Mariner, Chief Engineer Officer and Shipboard Electrical Engineer - is supported by the state-of-the art laboratory facilities offering 25 specialised simulators and ISO 9001 education quality management system implemented by the University.
The students graduate from the Gdynia Maritime University as holders of a few diplomas: master of science - engineer in a respective specialization, officer rank of a midshipman of the Polish Navy and, graduates in marine specializations, as holders of a diploma of a merchant marine officer. The high level of educational standards guarantees the graduates successful employment on the global seafaring markets with most prestigious shipowners.
The Gdynia Maritime University also offers specialized post-graduation training for higher officer ranks by promoting some 5 000 graduates annually.
Two Faculties have licences to award doctor of science degree while the other two are in progress to obtain such licences. The Gdynia Maritime University is also the owner of two seagoing vessels on board which the students receive their seagoing practical training:
•S/V "DAR MLODZIEZY", a splendid, world-famous tall ship who visit the majority of the world ports in her capacity of an Ambassador of the Republic of Poland.
•RTS "HORYZONT II", a research and training ship, also employed to perform research works in co-operation with the Polish Academy of Sciences during her expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctica.
The students also develop their sailing pursuits at the University Yacht Club in Gdynia.
The activities of the Gdynia Maritime University are enlarged and supported by the Foundation for the Development of the Gdynia Maritime University, "Enamor" - Research and Production Enterprise, Officer Training Centre, Academy Maritime Services and Foundation for the Safety of Navigation and Environmental Protection.
The Maritime University actively co-operates in the conduct of joint research projects, preparation of young generation academic staff and in the exchange of students directly with 18 maritime establishment of higher education within international organisations such as: European University Association (EUA) and International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU). The new strategy for further growth and development adopted by the Senate of the Gdynia Maritime University will ensure the strengthening of the University's role as a worldwide marine-oriented centre of studies and training preparing professionals - citizens of the World.
